The summer school and doctoral symposium aim to provide an immersive learning experience at the intersection of human behavior and artificial intelligence by bringing together students, researchers, and professionals to explore innovative approaches to designing ethical, transparent, and impactful AI systems. Through a rich program of keynote lectures, interactive workshops, hands-on sessions, and panel discussions, the event will foster collaboration, spark creative research, and equip participants with the practical skills needed to address real-world challenges in AI—ranging from scientific workflows and data visualization to decision-making and sustainability.
AGENDA
Day 1: Welcome and Foundations of Human-AI Interactions ( Monday, September 22 )
On Monday, September 22, the Summer School will kick off with registration and a welcome session, including an opening by the Dean and an introduction to the event. A keynote titled “The Future of Human-AI Interaction: Opportunities and Challenges” will set the tone for the week. In the afternoon, a doctoral symposium featuring student posters will explore approaches to quantifying and qualifying human-AI interactions, followed by an interactive workshop on designing AI systems with real-world impact, focusing on ethical AI, transparency, and societal considerations. The day will conclude with a panel discussion featuring experts from academia, industry, and policymaking discussing the integration of AI across different sectors.
Day 2: AI in Science and Visualization ( Tuesday, September 23 )
On Tuesday, September 23, the focus will shift to AI’s role in scientific processes and data visualization. The day will begin with a lecture on scientific workflows and the role of AI, particularly in the context of ExtremeXP, covering workflow automation, reproducibility, and trust in scientific results. This will be followed by an interactive workshop where participants will use ExtremeXP for scientific data visualization with real tools and datasets. After a lunch break, a lecture by a renowned data visualization expert will emphasize how visualization bridges AI with human understanding, leading into a hands-on session to create intuitive visualizations for complex data. The day will wrap up with an interactive discussion on the creative potential of AI visualization in the realm of art and science.
Day 3: Excursion to the Slovenian Seaside (Wednesday, September 24 )
On Wednesday, September 24, participants will embark on an excursion to the Slovenian seaside. The day will start early with a bus trip to Izola for a guided tour, followed by lunch by the Adriatic Sea. In the afternoon, there will be a visit of Piran, which will include a discussion on the role of AI in promoting sustainability within coastal ecosystems. After some free exploration in Piran, the day will end with a return journey to Ljubljana.
Day 4: AI and Decision-Making (Thursday, September 25 )
On Thursday, September 25, the agenda will center on AI and decision-making processes. The morning will feature a lecture on understanding the circularity of decision-making in both nature and AI, addressing topics such as stochastic processes, energy efficiency, and context awareness. Participants will then engage in a workshop on decision-making simulations using Markov models. Following lunch, an industry-focused lecture will explore practical approaches to translating data into decisions, presented by an AI applications specialist. The day will continue with a panel discussion on the risks and opportunities associated with AI decision-making, culminating in a group brainstorming session to design an AI-enhanced decision framework.
Day 5: Final Projects and Closing (Friday, September 26 )
On Friday, September 26, the Summer School will conclude with a day dedicated to final projects and closing ceremonies. In the morning, teams will present their projects on human-AI interaction frameworks, showcasing their collaborative work. This will be followed by a feedback session and an award ceremony where the best project will be recognized and microcertificates of participation will be distributed. The event will end with closing remarks and a final networking session, offering participants a chance to connect and reflect on their experiences throughout the week.
